Understand before you leave.

Russia has an extensive university network, with institutions in major cities such as Moscow, Saint Petersburg, Kazan and Novosibirsk. Fields range from engineering to medicine, economics, computer science and the humanities.

For many students, Russia also represents a strong cultural and personal experience: a new language, major architectural heritage and a student life that unfolds across the city.

The Russian system is mainly organised around the bachelor's degree (four years), the master's degree (two years) and the doctorate. There are also specialist programs, generally longer, which include in-depth professional training.

Program titles, durations and entry requirements can vary between institutions. It is essential to check the specific program, language of instruction and prerequisites before applying.

The bachelor's degree is the first university cycle. It provides a solid foundation in a discipline and can lead to a master's degree or to professional employment.

Admission is generally based on a review of the academic record, with requirements varying by university and program. Some institutions may require entrance exams or a preparatory year.

The master's degree is designed for students with a bachelor's degree or equivalent. It allows for specialisation, the development of a research project or the strengthening of professional skills.

Master's programs may be taught in Russian or, in some cases, in English. The availability of these programs and their entry requirements must be confirmed directly with the institution.

The specialist degree is an integrated qualification combining general education and professional training. It is offered in fields such as medicine, architecture and some areas of engineering.

Its duration and structure differ from the bachelor's and master's degrees. It is therefore important to understand the exact structure of the course before choosing this path.

Many universities offer a preparatory year for international students. It generally combines Russian language learning with an introduction to the target discipline.

This year can support academic integration, but it does not automatically guarantee admission to the desired program. Procedures, costs and progression requirements must be verified.

Most programs are taught in Russian. Good command of the language is therefore an important factor in academic success and integration.

English-taught programs exist at some institutions, but their number and availability vary. A program advertised in English should always be confirmed by the university, including for subsequent years.

Student life varies greatly from one city to another. Large metropolises offer a dense cultural life, while medium-sized university cities may offer a setting closer to campus life.

University residences, libraries, societies and events shape campus life. Adapting to the climate, local pace and language is part of the experience.

The budget depends on the city, accommodation, lifestyle and university fees. Moscow and Saint Petersburg are generally more expensive than cities such as Kazan, Tomsk or Novosibirsk.

We recommend building a realistic budget covering accommodation, meals, transport, insurance, supplies and a margin for unexpected costs. Ask us for an updated estimate for your situation.

Students can generally choose between a university residence and private accommodation. University housing is often more affordable, but availability and conditions vary by institution.

Private renting offers more independence, with additional steps: lease, guarantees, proximity to campus and understanding the local market. We help you identify options before departure.

An admission file generally includes a valid passport, diplomas and transcripts, photographs, translations and, depending on the case, legalised or apostilled documents.

Each university publishes its own list. Some institutions also require a motivation letter, a CV, a medical certificate or proof of payment. The exact list must be confirmed before submission.

After the application is accepted, the university may initiate an invitation procedure. This document is often required to apply for a student visa.

Timelines and invitation formats vary. It is important to anticipate this step and check with the university and the competent consulate which documents are required.

The student visa application is made through the competent consulate or centre. It relies on a precise file: passport, invitation, form, photographs, insurance and any supporting documents.

Requirements, timelines and procedures can change. We help you prepare your file, but the final decision belongs to the competent authorities.
